If you're like me you oftentimes get very deeply involved in your daily life: raising kids, working and paying the bills. Indeed the mundane parts of existence take so much effort and attention that you can easily lose sight of that which is beautiful in this life. Wouldn't you agree?
The problem with this situation is how it creates a gaping hole in your heart. The more you focus your attention on the mundane the wider and deeper this hole becomes. Given enough time to grow this void will overtake you causing all manner of negative outcomes. Depression, sadness, insensitivity, anger and frustration all come to mind. Take a moment to look in your heart. Do you feel this? Are you here with me?
Isn't it interesting how so many people turn to drugs or alcohol to fill this void? Or, perhaps, losing themselves in the many intellectual distractions available to us today. Television, movies, video games. You get the idea. I'm not immune to these very tempting distractions. But here's the rub... they don't solve the core issue. Sure, they distract you, but the core issue still remains.
What is that core issue? Insensitivity. Insensitivity caused by focus on and habituation to your mundane existence. It deadens us all and it's really such a shame!
Surely you've heard this phrase before: "Stop and smell the roses!" As trite as this saying is, there's a nugget of wisdom therein that I can't help but fixate on. Focus on and consumption by the mundane is the core issue. The antidote is clearly to focus your attention elsewhere. But where?
What helps me most is to focus on now. Right now. Hyper focused attention on what's happening right now is the perfect antidote to this illness of habituation. The best part of this approach is how you can literally do it anywhere. No special equipment is needed. You don't have to make time. Just focus on what's happening right now. Deeply. Fully. Completely. Do this and watch your mundane existence melt into the background where it belongs.
The beauty of this change in perspective is how it unleashes your passion. Focus on the mundane kills passion. Passion is just sitting beneath the surface waiting to explode. Yet we hold it back through our mundane focus. I choose to live a passionate life whenever possible. I want to love fully. Live fully. Enjoy every moment I can grasp. In this way there is no room for the mundane in my mind... except only as necessary.
You know, this life is short. So precious and so short. Each of us can be snuffed out at any moment. We like to pretend this isn't true. But it is. Yet we squander our precious time chasing such unimportant goals. We lose ourselves in the chase and, as such, build a lifetime of regrets. Trust me... when you're on your deathbed the true value of the day's pursuits will become crystal clear. But, by then, it'll be tragically late. There's nothing sadder to me than deathbed regrets. I want nothing to do with them.
So, take time now. Before it's too late! Enjoy this life. Take every moment and own it. Taste it. Feel it. Go as deeply into each one as you can. Enjoy the heat of the sun and the deep colors of a cloudy sky. Feel the rain on your skin. Revel in it. Test your muscles and flex your mind. Stare hard and long into the eyes of your loved ones. Touch them. Feel them. Explore them. Go as deeply into each one of them as you can. That way lies passion. That way lies love. Deep, magnificent and passionate love of life.
There is so much to experience between now and death! Don't miss an opportunity. Don't wait. Act now to turn your mundane existence into a magnificent one!
